A travel with risk of terrorist attack

September 23, 2009

I made a very difficult decision last friday. Emphasis on the word difficult because the decision was a matter of life and death.

I travel to Misamis Occidental last week to conduct audit on two partner financial institutions of the company where I am presently connected. The original travel itinerary was to leave Ozamiz City at around 2:00 PM or 3:00 PM per approved travel order. This is actually the best time to travel from Ozamiz City back to Cagayan de Oro City for you still see daylight while passing the province of Lanao del Norte. I don’t mean that this is the only time when Lanao del Norte is safe. We can’t really tell or predict when bandits who cross this part of Mindanao will sow danger to commuters.

Like I said, I’m scheduled to depart from Ozamiz City at those times but was delayed to 6:20PM. The reasons for the delay? We were able to finish the validation of sub-borrowers at around 3:00PM. Aside from the validation, I still have to meet with the officers of Mikro Finaning at their Ozamiz Branch to get additional documents for their accreditation with us. The Mikro Financing thing was not included in the approved itinerary. But I have to do it to save on cost. It’s bad for business to schedule another trip just to validate the sales record of this institution. Besides, whose company is not saving on cost today?

My business with Mikro Financing Office ended past 5:00PM. I should have stayed in Ozamiz for another night but was hesitant knowing that my accomodation, perhaps, could not reimbursed. I have a tight budget this time due to my investment in real estate. So I took the ferry which left port at 6:20PM and rode on a bus bound to Iligan City crisscrossing the many towns of Lanao del Norte, towns which have remnants of terrorist attacks in recent years or months, with an ardent prayer that I will arrive at Iligan City safely. Fortunately, I did. I left Iligan City at 9:00PM after I took my dinner and hit the road again to Cagayan de Oro City. It was past 11:00PM when I reached home.

It was only on following day that I realized the risk I took. But I also remember what my Chief Operation Officer (COO) had told us during our conference last August in Makati City that we should think that we are in this company because we chose to be here and, thus, we should work hard. Afterall, I came from another government agency whose banner is “an agency of choice”. We need to  have extra mile in our job. This is not work but a job.

This realization had me wondering why some people can’t even do their work because a service vehicle is not available when they can take a non-aircon or aircon bus plying teh route to their destination. I would not know their reasons. But as much as I am concern, I took extra steps to deliver my work even to almost come face-to-face with terror.

Should I take similar risk next time? I deal with this question once I cross that same bridge again.
