Cagwait White Beach: The Unseen Paradise

June 26, 2008

Cagwait White Beach was formerly coined as Waikiki Beach of the Philippines by Charles Lindbergh. i don’t really know who this person is/was, except that he was the famous (daw?) american aviator who saw the beachline from his plane to somewhat resembles that of waikiki beach in hawaii. but i am so glad that cagwait did not carry such monicker. it is common for filipinos to compare or use the name of known places or persons to describe or give name to beautifiul places in the philippines for reason that it would attract tourists.

i hate that idea for our place, the diversity of our people and our natural blessings, and our uniqueness are reason enough to bring tourists. cagwait white beach deserves to rise on its on credit. if tourist comes and loves it, it is not because we marketed it as the Waikiki Beach of the Philippines but because the place can sell itself to tourist.

cagwait white beach is a scenic, impressive, unadulterated, horseshoe shaped coastline blessed with powdery white sands and clear blue water directly facing the mighty pacific ocean. there are already resorts located along or near the beachline, to name a few are the Cagwait White Beach Resort that is owned and maintained by the local government unit of cagwait, Lolenghayaw Beach Resort, Extreme Beach Resor, etc.

the first time i was there was during my elementary days. there were no beach resort that time but open cottages were built along the beachline which you can rent for a day at P30.00-P100.00 each. the second time was with my classmates in high school.

more amenities and facilities are already in placed today. the last time i went there was during our annual assessment in the previous company where i worked; that was a month before sam milby joined pinoy big brother. sam milby, actually, is a frequent visitor of cagwait white beach before he joins showbiz.

it was during that visit that i was able to stroll the long beachline from end-to-end. it was before the sunset. the place is also good for skimboarding and kayaking. i was even fortunate to rent a small banca at a fraction of the price. it was a nice experience paddling it against the current or waves.

if you are lucky enough, especially after the annual kaliguan festival, you can enjoy the sea with the bamboo raft which cagwait white beach resort always had. Kaliguan Festival is celebrated every 24th day of June in time with the Feast of John the Baptist. it is 4-day celebration with live bands, native sports competitions, skimboarding competition, float contest, native dances, etc.

the Kaliguan Festival, started in 1996, is highlighted every year by the Perlas ng Kaliguan, a beauty pageant showcasing the beautiful women of surigao del sur. the annual festival, plus the sumptuous seafoods like the pasayan (shrimps), lukon (prawns) and alimango (crabs), are a good reason for local and international tourists to come to cagwait every june.

cagwait white beach is one of the reasons that suriganons are proud of. if we have complained and/or endured the bad conditions of our highways, we are still grateful that on the other/better side of this surigao del sur’s hidden natural treasures like the cagwait white beach lay untouched and unexploited by the influx of more tourists.

the local government unit of cagwait proudly calls it ” The Unseen Paradise”. cagwait is located 32-kilometers from tandag city, the capital of surigao del sur. it is a six to seven hours of land travel from davao or four hours land travel from butuan city via san francisco, agusan del sur.

I’ts nice that we are having our own blogs about our tourism industry here in Surigao del Sur.
And it helps many people especially the students who are searching about the tourism industry here in our country.
I am requesting that please make a site all about our tourism industry/tourists spots, so that we students are not getting hard in researching about our tourism.
(heheh..never mind my english^_^)

hi.. can you give me the exact location of cagwait beach resort and their contact number/email address? thanks..

Posted by mae at August 1, 2009, 8:55 pm

Cagwait White Beach is located at Brgy. Poblacion, Cagwait, Surigao del Sur, 1-kilometer away from the national highway going to Tandag. You can take a land trip from Butuan City or Davao City via San Francisco, Agusan del Sur.

It’s unfortunate that this side of Surigao del Sur has no telephone infrastructure. Mobile phones serves as the communication medium. But I still don’t have their mobile numbers. I hit the beach straight when I’m in Surigao del Sur, no more hassle of getting a reservation.

I, however, can guarantee that you’ll have a place to sta at the White Beach. There are still few tourists there; it’s the locals who frequent the beach.

I lived on that very beach back in 1981-1985! We had cottages built right on the beach! We had a generator and had a movie Nipa movie house and would invite the town to watch movies. No electric, NO running water! And only the people of the town would come there. It was beautiful. I remember waiting for the fisherman to come in from diving to buy my dinner. I think I was at that time the only americana from Davao to Cagwait! Those were wonderful memories with all the nice people of Cagwait!

Posted by Keanu at September 25, 2009, 5:38 pm

Hi, Keanu.

The place is so different now than in the 80’s. But it is still unspoiled. Perhaps you can paid a visit again.

Posted by jadestone at September 27, 2009, 7:59 pm

Wow! I didn’t know there exists such a beach.

Posted by Work in Dubai at September 28, 2009, 5:14 pm

Pagbalik mo from Dubai, try to explore the countryside, you are in for a surprise. Ang daming magagandang white beaches sa Pinas. I am really fortunate coz I was able to enjoy their finest sand without spending so much. So how about the other provinces pa.

Posted by jadestone at September 30, 2009, 9:31 pm

No question, Cagwait White beach is really the Tourist Haven of Surigao del Sur envision by Cagwaitnons. One way maybe to achieve is for you cagwaitnon to come by during the Kaliguan Festival and discuss some of suggestions to sustain our beach beauty and protect it.

Posted by jule at March 2, 2010, 7:25 pm

Surigao del Sur has more places that are interesting for tourists.

Where you from?
